Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have announced that they have re-signed non-import offensive lineman Steve Morley prior to him hitting the free agent market tomorrow. The Football Club has also signed non-import linebacker/long snapper Jordan Matechuk to a contract.
"Steve is a very experienced offensive lineman and a valuable commodity to our team," said Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack. "We're happy we were able to lock him up before the deadline."
Morley (6-7, 306, Saint Mary's, DOB: August 18, 1981 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) suited up for all 18 games last season at right guard along with the East Final and Grey Cup championship. The former first overall pick of the Calgary Stampeders in 2003 is very versatile and has played both guard and tackle during his six-year career with Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Toronto and Calgary. Morley also spent time with the NFL's Green Bay Packers, New York Jets and NFL Europe's Rhein Fire.
Matechuk (5-10, 254, Victoria Rebels, DOB: September 22, 1985 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan) signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2008 and served as the team's long snapper until he was released prior to last season's training camp due to legal issues that occurred off the field. In three seasons with the TiCats, Matechuk played in 41 regular season games and recorded 23 special teams tackles. He attended training camp with the Blue Bombers in both 2007 and 2008 after playing three seasons in the Canadian Junior Football League with three different teams. He began his CJFL career with the Regina Thunder in 2006 before moving on to the Winnipeg Rifles in 2007 and the Victoria Rebels in 2008.
"We are signing Jordan based on his football talent and because we feel that he can improve the depth on our roster," said Mack. "Whatever Jordan has gone through in the past in his personal life doesn't affect our decision to bring him in. We feel everyone deserves a second chance and Jordan has demonstrated professionalism and honesty throughout this entire process. We're very excited to have him in our training camp and we look forward to seeing what he can do for our team."
