Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms came away with a pair of road wins over the weekend, and on Monday a pair of players have came away with some individual hardware. Phantoms left wing and team captain Mike Ambrosia was named the United States Hockey League's co-CCM Offensive Player of the Week and defenseman Eric Sweetman was named the CCM Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

"It feels good," Ambrosia said. "But I think the more important thing is we got two road wins and kind of put an exclamation point on the first half of the year."

Ambrosia notched six points - two goals and an assist in the Phantoms' 5-3 victory over Green Bay on Friday and a goal and two assists in the 7-4 win over Des Moines on Saturday - to give him 24 (7G-17A) on the season and stretch his point-scoring streak to four games. The Princeton commit was especially dangerous on special teams getting a goal and an assist on the power play against the Gamblers and a goal and an assist while short-handed against the Buccaneers. His short-handed goal Saturday came just 34 seconds after Des Moines had tied the game up and been awarded a five-minute man-advantage.

"That road trip was maybe our biggest challenge of the year. We knew it was going to be really tough," Head Coach Anthony Noreen said. "For Mike to step up and perform the way he did was what we needed. That's part of the reason why he's our captain."

Sweetman, in his first USHL season, had two points (1G-1A) and a plus-4 rating Saturday night against the Buccaneers. He bookended the scoring on the night - assisting on Soren Jonzzon's game-opening goal coming 34 seconds into the game, and netting his second goal of the season, going top shelf with a wrist shot from the point, with 4:26 left in the third period. It was the first multi-point game of the Woodbine, Md. native's career.

"I wasn't expecting this, but I'm really excited to get it," Sweetman said. "As the season's gone on, I've gotten a lot more comfortable - starting to join the rush a bit more and trying to create a bit of offense."

This the first time either Ambrosia or Sweetman has captured the USHL's weekly award and the second time this season that the Phantoms have had two players earn the honors in the same week - center Dylan Margonari and defenseman Jordan Young also earned the distinction back in October. Matthew O'Connor has been named the USHL's Reebok Goaltender of the Week twice this season.
