Goldeyes Open 2012 Season in Texas, Get Visit from Quebec

WINNIPEG - The schedule for the Winnipeg Goldeyes 19th season will be one of the most exciting in franchise history, featuring games against teams in all three American Association divisions and inter-league play with the Can-Am League.
The first two weeks of the Goldeyes 2012 docket features entirely Texas opponents. Winnipeg sets out to defend its North Division title on May 18 on the road against the Amarillo Sox in the first of three games in north Texas. From there, the Goldeyes will head south to tangle with the expansion Laredo Lemurs for three games and then finish the nine-game road trip to start the season with three games in west Texas against the El Paso Diablos.
The Goldeyes return to Shaw Park on May 29 to begin the home portion of their schedule with a three game-series against Amarillo, marking 12 consecutive games against South Division teams to begin the campaign. Last season, Winnipeg didn't face a South Division opponent.
"The organization is excited to start the season for the first time ever in Texas," Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier said. "It will feel like a more complete league this season because we are playing three of the four teams in the South Division."
For the first time in franchise history, the Goldeyes will play 12 different teams during the regular season, while a variety of nine opponents will visit Shaw Park in 2012. Grand Prairie is the only American Association team that the Goldeyes won't play this season.
"It's fantastic that our great fans will see nine different teams in 2012," Goldeyes owner Sam Katz said. "It's variety that's unmatched in independent baseball."
With 13 teams in the American Association, a partnership was formed with the Can-Am League for inter-league play. The Goldeyes won't venture to the East Coast this season, but the three-time defending Can-Am League champion Quebec Les Capitales will come to Winnipeg for a three-game series from July 24-26.
"We are excited to be able to bring both leagues together. It will provide new competition, and fans will be able to see a variety of teams from both the U.S. and Canada," American Association commissioner Miles Wolfe said.
Once again in the North Division with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Sioux Falls Pheasants and St. Paul Saints, the Goldeyes tangle with their division counterparts 46 times, while taking on teams from the Central and South Division's 51 times and the three games against Quebec for a 100-game schedule.
Game times at Shaw Park will remain the same for the 2012 season. Weekday games will start at 7 p.m., aside from 11 a.m. starts on May 31 and June 13 and a noon start on July 26. Saturday games will begin at 6 p.m., while eight Sunday games will be a 1:30 p.m. matinee.
There are still spots available in the Goldeyes Winter Skills Camp. Kids interested in attending should register as soon as possible via Goldeyes.com. The registration deadline is December 16.
