WATERLOO, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks skated past the Fighting Saints in a high-scoring affair Friday night at Young Arena. The Black Hawks scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to pull away with the win.

A very entertaining first period that saw the Fighting Saints outshoot the Black Hawks eleven to nine resulted in no goals for either side. The Fighting Saints killed off the only penalty of the frame, and the score remained knotted at zero after the first twenty minutes.

The second frame could not have been more different from the scoreless first period. Taylor Cammarata broke through for Waterloo at 1:38 of the period, shooting a puck from the right circle into the upper left corner of the net past Gabe Antoni. With the Fighting Saints on the powerplay, the Black Hawks would strike again, getting a shorthanded marker courtesy of Vince Hinostroza to push their lead to 2-0.

The Fighting Saints would not be held down for long, however. On the same powerplay, Ryan Siiro redirected a Matt Caito blast to close the gap to 2-1. Ted Doherty provided the secondary assist. Waterloo would stretch the lead once more. Cammarata was denied on a wrap-around attempt, but the puck kicked out to Mark Naclerio, who deposited it into the net to make the Black Hawk lead 3-1.

The Saints responded with yet another powerplay goal. Shane Sooth worked the puck from the right corner to Shane Walsh in the slot, who one-timed it past Eamon McAdam to make the score 3-2. Sooth would the game on an unassisted goal just a minute and a half later. As he carried the puck into the zone on a two-on-two rush with Walsh, the defense collapsed to Walsh, leaving Sooth alone to slide the puck past McAdam.

The Saints could not keep the game tied headed to the third period, though. Aaron Pearce redirected an Ed Wittchow blast to give the Black Hawks the 4-3 lead as the game headed to its final frame.

The Black Hawks struck quickly in the third period, with Cammarata getting his second goal of the night just over five minutes into the period. The Fighting Saints elected to pull their goaltender for the extra attacker down three goals with three minutes to go, but the gamble did not pay off. Naclerio slid the puck from the red line into an empty net, scoring his second goal of the night and making the score 6-3.

Friday's game against Waterloo and Saturday's contest in Chicago are road games nine and ten for the Fighting Saints during a stretch of ten of eleven away from the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Fighting Saints return home next week, playing Cedar Rapids on Wednesday night and taking on the Omaha Lancers on Friday evening.
