Saints Tally Two Powerplay Goals to Beat Steel Friday

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Fighitng Saints used two powerplay goals to defeat the Chicago Steel in Dubuque and win their seventh game in a row on Friday night.

The first twenty minutes was noticeably physical, but neither team found the back of the net in the opening frame. The Fighting Saints outshot the Steel 10-5 in the first, despite Chicago earning the lone powerplay chance in the period.

The Fighting Saints would snap the scoreless tie in the second period. Matt Caito slid the puck ahead to Zemgus Girgensons, who snapped a quick shot home from the right circle for a powerplay goal and a 1-0 Fighting Saints lead. Once again on the man advantage, the Saints would find another tally. Tyler Lundey redirected a Max Gardiner feed into the back of the net to stretch the lead to 2-0. Teddy Doherty got credit for the other assist on the goal.

Chicago was able to pull closer in the third period. On the powerplay, the Steel fired a shot onto Fighting Saints netminder Gabe Antoni, who made the initial save. After the stop, the Steel were able to score on a scramble in front of the net, with Aiden Cavallini pushing the puck across the line. Though the Steel got within one, they could not get even. The Saints closed the game out to move to 8-2-0 on the season.

The Fighting Saints will play the Lancers in Omaha tomorrow night, in a game that will be their first of another five straight away from the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Saints will next be at home on Wednesday, November 23, the night before Thanksgiving, against Cedar Rapids.
