Pink the Rink Strikes a Blow Against Breast Cancer

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Fighting Saints weren't the only winners when they defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-1 in their pink jerseys on Friday, October 14. The team and Finley Hospital, partnering to present the team's second annual Pink the Rink night, grossed more than $25,000 for the Finley Hospital Cancer Services through the Visiting Nurse Association and the Wendt Regional Cancer Center and the fight against breast cancer.
The custom pink jerseys that the Fighting Saints wore in the winning effort were auctioned off to raise money for the Visiting Nurse Association's mammogram program, with some being sold at silent auction during the game, and some sold at a postgame auction in the DB&T Club. During the auction, bidders were able to sip on specialty pink drinks, with a portion of the proceeds also donated to the cause.
Prior to the game, proceeds from tickets sold at Finley Hospital and through an online ticket portal at DubuqueFightingSaints.com went to benefit the Wendt Center. Additionally, sponsorships from key Finley Hospital partners played a critical role in the community fundraising efforts.
The Fighting Saints jerseys were not the only pink regalia in the Mystique Community Ice Center. Many fans wore pink to the game in support of the cause, and the arena was decked in pink balloons and streamers for the occasion. In addition, the pink theme touched on all aspects of the game presentation, from the music to the intermission contests.
Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv was pleased that the partnership, now in its second season, continues to strike a blow in a fight that touches nearly everyone in the community.
"Events like Pink the Rink bring together our community for a very worthy cause," he said. "We thank our partner, Finley Hospital, for serving as the driving force behind Pink the Rink and our fans for their continued support of the fight against breast cancer, and we both look forward to continuing the fight next season."
