Lyon's Season-High 41 Saves Backstops 3-2 Win at Tri-City

Kearney, Neb. - Alex Lyon registered a season-high 41 saves as the Omaha Lancers hung for a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm Friday evening at the Viaero Event Center. With the win, the Lancers improved to 5-3-1 on the year and moved into a tie atop the Western Conference standings with 11 standings points.
Neither side found the back of the net in the opening period despite a combined 20 shots on goal. Lyon answered the 13 Storm shots that came his way in period one while Tri-city netminder Pheonix Copley turned away the seven Lancers bids on goal in the opening frame.
After a predominantly scoreless second period, Michael Ferrantino finally broke the deadlock 14:19 into the middle period when the future Michigan State Spartan was able to get wide on the right wing before snapping a wrist shot from a sharp angle between the pads of Copley. Matt Gaudreau garnered the only assist on the five-on-five even strength tally, which marked the sixth time in nine games this season that the Lancers have scored the game's first goal.
The Lancers doubled their lead just 35 seconds into the final frame when Jimmy Murray buried a left wing wrist shot just under the crossbar for his second goal of the season. Casey Bailey and Nolan Zajac assisted on the even strength marker. Tri-City sliced Omaha's lead in half just past the midway of the third period when a centering feed from the left corner by Brad Schierhorn was redirected atop the Omaha goal crease by Kenny Brooks for his first goal of the season. Nick Lappin grabbed the secondary assist on the five-on-five goal netted 10:01 into the final period. The Lancers regained their two-goal advantage and the lead for good two and a half minutes later when Eli Lichtenwald found Max Vallis alone atop the goal crease who backhanded home his second goal of the season. Anthony Hamburg earned the secondary helper on the goal tallied 12:38 into the final period of regulation. The Storm climbed back to within a single goal late when, with Copley back to the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Soren Jonzzon punched in his first goal of the season. Tyler Amburgey and Dylan Maller assisted on the man-advantage marker scored 18:57 into the third period but that's as close as Tri-City would get as Omaha was able to hang on for its fifth one-goal victory of the season.
Lyon earned the victory after a season-high 41 saves on 43 Tri-City shots. The native of Baudette, Minnesota is now 4-1-1 on the year. Meanwhile, Copley suffered the loss in goal for Tri-City after 25 saves on 28 Lancers shots on goal.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they return to the Omaha Civic Auditorium for a 7:05 PM showdown with the defending Clark Cup Champion Dubuque Fighting Saints.
