Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants won their 4th straight game and 1st road game of the season defeating the Prince George Cougars 4-2 Friday night at the CN Centre in Prince George. Jordan Martinook registered his first career WHL hat trick in the victory.
In their five previous road games, the Giants did not score the game's first goal, but that changed on Friday night as Jordan Martinook beat Drew Owsley to give the Giants a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.
The second period got a little feisty as Jackson Houck was ejected after receiving a 5 minute major for checking to the head and a game misconduct. Prince George's Josh Smith was also tossed from the game for going after Houck, picking up a 5 minute major for fighting and a game misconduct. Martinook would extend the Giants lead with his 2nd goal of the game and 8th of the season just past the midway point of the frame. 2-0 is how things stood after 40 minutes.
Dalton Sward got in on the scoring act in the third period, snapping home his 5th goal of the year past Owsley to put the Giants up 3-0. However, Vancouver would get into serious penalty trouble in the final frame and the Cougars would capitalize scoring a pair of power play goals to cut the lead to 3-2 with under 6 minutes left to play. Fortunately, Martinook would add some insurance scoring his 9th of the year for his first career WHL hat trick and most importantly securing a 4-2 victory for the Giants. Adam Morrison made 20 saves for the victory in net. Prince George finished 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Giants were 0-for-3. With the loss, the Cougars have now lost 8 straight games.
These two teams will be back at it again tomorrow night at the CN Centre. Puck drop is at 7:05 pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm.
