September 30, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, and head coach Matt Thomas announced today that the team has signed rookie defenseman Sebastian Owuya (OO-ya, Segh-BASS-tee-yen). Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Owuya, who turns 20 on Oct. 8, most recently skated in two games and registered a +1 rating with the Winnipeg Jets in September's YoungStars Tournament hosted by the Vancouver Canucks in Penticton, British Columbia.
The 6-foot-4 and 205-pound defenseman was selected in the sixth round (169th overall) by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Owuya suited up in 66 games for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League last season collecting ten assists, 69 penalty minutes and a +8 rating. He added six points (1g-5a) and 18 penalty minutes in 14 postseason games.
"Sebastian is a big, mobile defensive defenseman that has lots of potential," said Thomas. "His experience in the Swedish Elite League and last year in the Western Hockey League has prepared him well for the pro game. He is very coachable and should blossom as the year progresses."
The native of Hagersten, Sweden additionally skated in 11 games with Timra of the Swedish Elite League during the 2009-10 season.
