Tulsa Drillers News Release

It was the Darin Holcomb show Saturday night at Corpus Christi's Whataburger Field. The third baseman collected four hits and all five runs batted in for the Drillers, including the game winner in the 10th inning, as Tulsa defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks 5-4.

The win allowed the Drillers to win their three-game series in Corpus Christi, two games to one. It was the final meeting of the regular season between the two teams, and the Drillers finished with a 7-5 mark in 12 meetings.

For Holcomb, the five runs batted in matched a game high for a Tulsa batter this season. Jimmy Cesario also collected five RBI in a game in Midland on May 27.

Holcomb's heroics began after the Hooks opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Jimmy Paredes singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a stolen base. He scored the game's first run on a ground out from Chris Wallace.

The lead held until the top of the third inning when Holcomb struck for the first time. Tim Wheeler doubled and Ben Paulsen walked in front of his two-run double that gave Tulsa a 2-1 lead.

Corpus Christi tied the game in the bottom half of the third when Jonathan Villar singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from J.D. Martinez before Holcomb put the Drillers back in front in the fifth. Tim Wheeler led off with a base hit, and following a pair of ground outs, scored on a two-out single from the third baseman.

The lead increased to 4-2 in when Tommy Field singled and scored on Holcomb's third hit of the night.

Holcomb's work seemed to have been wiped out in the bottom of the seventh as the Hooks rallied to tie the game. With one out, Tulsa starter Cory Riordan hit Jacob Goebbert with a pitch. After Kody Hinze grounded out, T.J. Steele struck with his sixth home run of the season. The two-run homer evened the score at 4-4.

But, the tying home run sent the game into extra innings and allowed Holcomb to add to his big night. Paulsen led off the top of the tenth inning with a base hit against Hooks' reliever Kyle Greenwalt. After a wild pitch, Holcomb brought Paulsen home with a lined single into right field.

Daniel Turpen made sure the lead held this time. The new Drillers' closer pitched around a two-out single in the bottom of the tenth to record his sixth save of the year.

Dustin Molleken (2-1) struck out four in two scoreless relief inning to pick up the win.

Riordan turned in another solid outing but was again unable to get his second win of the season. He allowed the four runs on five hits in seven innings and walked only one hitter while striking out eight.

Tulsa will now begin a three-game series Sunday night in San Antonio. Christian Friedrich (6-5, 3.93 ERA) will pitch the opener for the Drillers against Rob Musgrave (5-2, 3.47 ERA) of the Missions. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05PM at Wolff Stadium.
