Burch, Triple Play Highlight 8-4 Bums' Win

July 9, 2011 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

FLORENCE, KY-First baseman Chase Burch connected for two home runs and the Traverse City Beach Bums defense turned a triple play as they beat the Florence Freedom in front of 1,589 fans by a score of 8-4.

With the score tied 0-0 in the third inning, Beach Bums designated hitter Zack Pace reached with a two-out single to extend the inning and allow right fielder Matt Brown to single as well, putting runners at first and second base. Burch then hit the first pitch he saw from Freedom starting pitcher Chris Ingoglia over the left field fence for a three-run home run, his seventh of 2011 to give the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead.

Burch wasn't quite done yet. In the fifth, the first baseman came to the plate as the third batter of the fifth inning, playing for the United Way as part of the 5/3rd Home Run Payoff Inning, sponsored by 5/3rd Bank. Burch connected once again for his second home run of the ballgame, and helped 5/3rd Bank donate $530.00 to the United Way with his eighth home run of the season. The home runs mark the first time a Beach Bums player has hit two home runs in the same ballgame this year.

Later in the inning, Beach Bums second baseman Tom Zebroski delivered his second RBI-double of the contest to score two more runs to give Traverse City an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, Freedom left fielder John Malloy and shortstop Junior Arrojo reached first and second base to start the inning, bringing second baseman Kevin Haas to the plate. Haas hit a low line drive to Traverse City shortstop Jose Vargas, who played the ball on a hop. Vargas quickly applied a tag to Malloy, who had waited to see if Vargas was going to catch the baseball before it hit the ground. Vargas then touched second base to retire Arrojo, and then threw to first to retire Haas, completing the first Beach Bums triple play of the 2011 season.

Beach Bums All-Star Bryan Banes (7-0) pitched six innings allowing four runs (one earned) in earning his league-leading seventh win of the season. Ingoglia (4-4) allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings in suffering his fourth loss of 2011. The Beach Bums improve to 24-23 with the win, while Florence falls to 23-23 with the loss. Burch finished with five RBI, while Zebroski drove in three runs to lead the Beach Bums in the contest.

The first half of the 2011 Frontier League season concludes Sunday evening as the Beach Bums and Florence Freedom play the final game of a three-game series on 6:05 p.m. Right hander Don Pugliese gets the start for the Beach Bums. He'll be opposed by Florence righty Tim Holmes.
