Portland Scores Six in 7th Inning

Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Akron, Ohio - Turnabout was fair play in Akron Sunday afternoon. After allowing six two-out runs in the 7th inning last night, the Portland Sea Dogs turned the tables on the Akron Aeros with their own six-run, 7th inning rally in a 7-2 win. The Sea Dogs scored all of their runs in the inning after Aeros starter Kelvin De La Cruz (4-5) retired the first two batters of the seventh.

The explosion started with a solo home run from Matt Spring, his first with Portland. Portland then ran off six consecutive hits featuring a Mitch Dening two-run double. That was followed up with run-scoring hits by Vladimir Frias, Jon Hee and Chih-Hsien Chiang. In total, the Sea Dogs sent eleven men to the plate in the inning, racking up six runs on seven hits after spending most of the game trailing 1-0.

Akron got its lead early against Stephen Fife (8-3). Tim Fedroff and Juan Diaz led off with back-to-back singles. Then, Beau Mills grounded into a double play, scoring Fedroff from third base. However, that would be the only opportunity for the Aeros offense against Fife who allowed just four baserunners over the rest of his outing. Fife earned the win, his eighth of the year, tying him with Harrisburg's Brad Peacock for the most in the Eastern League.

Cesar Cabral and Blake Maxwell combined to go two and a third innings to close out the game for Portland. With the win, the Sea Dogs pick up a split on the road trip, going 3-3 in six games with Akron and Erie. The 2-1 series win in Akron is the first time Portland has won a regular season series there since 1999. It also wraps up a 14 game stretch against teams from the Western Division, which saw the Sea Dogs finish at 7-7.

The Sea Dogs will head home during a scheduled off day tomorrow. Portland returns to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder starting Tuesday, June 21st. That night will be Jimmy Buffett night. The ZOOperstars will be in town for a show during the game on June 22nd. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
