DES MOINES, IA, April 12, 2011 - Michael Haynes drilled a shot from 50 feet away at the 3rd quarter buzzer to fuel a comeback victory as the Iowa Energy advanced to the NBA D-League semifinals with a 112-107 win over Utah.
The Flash controlled most of the first three quarters behind a balanced scoring effort. The visitors held a 59-53 lead at halftime as Tony Gaffney scored 10 points and Andre Ingram added 9 before the break.
Utah scored the first six points of the 3rd quarter to extend the lead to 65-53. The Energy were able to cut into the lead, and trailed 82-75 with 1:42 left. With the game in the balance, Stinson and Haynes each scored a basket to draw Iowa closer. After a Utah free throw extended the lead to four, Haynes made two free throws of his own and Stanley Robinson scored on a dunk to tie the game with 3.7 seconds remaining in the quarter. It appeared that the quarter would end in a tie, but Iowa's Stefhon Hannah was called for a foul on a half-court attempt. Utah's Kevin Kruger made two of three free throws to put the Flash up by a pair.
With 1.2 seconds left in the quarter, Haynes received the inbounds pass and banked in a shot from behind half court to send the court into a frenzy; and put the home team up one.
Haynes' shot reinvigorated the Energy and the fans, and Iowa would not give up the lead the rest of the way. Utah got as close as one point in the last quarter, but each time they narrowed the gap, Iowa responded.
Haynes scored a career high 37 points grabbed 11 rebounds while Stinson added 34 points in the win. Scott VanderMeer had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Utah had six players in double figures, led by Orien Greene and Ronald Dupree, who each scored 17 points.
Iowa travels to Tulsa for game 1 of the semifinals Friday at 7pm. Game 2 will be Monday in Des Moines at 7pm. Tickets for Monday's playoff game will be available tomorrow at 10 AM by visiting www.IowaNBA.com, calling 515-564-8550 or at the arena box office.
