Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs were edged 4-3 by the visiting Owen Sound Attack in what proved to be an emotional, physical battle at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday evening.

The game had an emotional tone right from the get-go as Victor Terreri went toe-to-toe with Daniel Zweep in what proved to be a spirited heavy weight tilt as both players exchanged several punches in rapid succession.

The rough stuff continued following the fight as Darren Archibald was called for roughing after getting into it with Jesse Blacker in front of the Attack net.

With Owen Sound on the power play, former IceDog Jay Gilbert was able to convert as he beat Mark Visentin top-shelf, while another former 'Dog Matt Petgrave tallied an assist on the play and the visiting team took a 1-0 lead just past the midway point of the period.

The IceDogs were able to come back late in the period as former Attack forward Steven Shipley made a beautiful tip on a Shayne Rover point-shot to tie the game up.

The two teams would head into their dressing rooms with the game at a 1-1 tie after the first period of play.

The Attack come out quick in the second as Robby Mignardi was the recipient of a bad defensive end turnover and made no mistake in wristing the puck past Visentin to make it 2-1.

However, their lead wouldn't last long as IceDogs' rookie Jesse Graham let an absolute rocket go from the point that went top-shelf to pick up his first career OHL goal and tie the game 2-2.

Later in the period, the IceDogs created a great scoring chance in front of the Attack net, but Owen Sound players knocked the net off its pegs. Amidst the scrum, Attack defenseman Jesse Blacker jumped Steven Shipley and the two got into a brief tilt, but Blacker would receive an instigator penalty along with a ten minute misconduct. Owen Sound also got hit with a delay of game penalty for dislodging the net, and the 'Dogs were given a five-on-three advantage.

Ryan Strome wasted no time in capitalizing on the power play as he blasted home his 27th of the season with the help of Freddie and Dougie Hamilton.

The goal would give Niagara a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. Mark Visentin also made some key saves in the final minutes of the period, and the IceDogs led in shots 25-18.

Another former IceDog, Matt Petgrave, opened the third period scoring for Owen Sound to tie the game once again, 3-3.

Joey Hishon then followed up for the Attack to put them up 4-3 just moments later.

The IceDogs fourth line of Victor Terreri, Mitchell Theoret and Joel Wigle continued to have an impressive game as they created some solid energy in the third with a beautiful cycle, which eventually led to an Owen Sound penalty, giving the 'Dogs another crack at the power play.

Nothing would come of the man advantage, but a brouhaha occurred shortly after and both teams were given two penalties each, and the play would be brought to four-on-four.

Nothing came of the four-on-four either, and in the dying minutes of the third, the IceDogs pulled their goalie in efforts to tie the game, but they couldn't quite convert and the Attack took a close 4-3 victory over the 'Dogs. Three ex-IceDogs recorded points against their former team.

The IceDogs will return to action tomorrow night as they pay a visit to the Erie Otters at 7 p.m. The game will be available on 105.1 The River, but will not be broadcast on television.
