Sea Dogs to Raise Funds for Flood Relief

Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs and Sea Dogs Foundation are doing their part to make a difference in the lives of those affected by the recent severe flooding in nearby Charlotte County.

Earlier this month, some 100 houses were flooded due to a combination of rain and melting snow, driving some from their homes over Christmas. Sea Dogs president Wayne Long said the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team wanted to seize the earliest opportunity to help those in need.

With a full house expected for the New Year's Eve home game against the Moncton Wildcats, the Sea Dogs have set a goal of raising at least $10,000 to help the flood victims.

"It's terribly unfortunate that our neighbours in Charlotte County have been so hard hit by events beyond their control. We want to do what we can to help," Long said.

Fans will be asked to make donations at the game, with the Sea Dogs Foundation matching every donation dollar for dollar, up to the first $5,000.

"We have the greatest fans in the country and we have an area in our backyard in need," Long added. "We want to encourage and help our fans support these people by raising at least $10,000 at the New Year's Eve game."

The damage to New Brunswick alone has been estimated at $50 million from three December storms that have hit the Maritimes.

"This is really one of those times when the game on the ice takes a backseat," Long said.

Tickets are still available for the game, set for 7:30 p.m. start Dec. 31 at Harbour Station. All upper bowl tickets are just $10, and can be obtained by calling the Harbour Station box office at (506) 657-1234, or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.

Those unable to attend who would still like to help can make donations to the disaster relief fund for Eastern Charlotte County through Bank of Nova Scotia branches or the Charlotte County Credit Union. Money can be mailed to the Charlotte County Credit Union at 4B Wallace St., St. George, N.B., E5C 3P1. For further information, contact the Bank of Nova Scotia at (506) 755-3374 or Charlotte County Credit Union at (506) 755-3460.

Those interested may also donate recyclables to Mike's Bottle Depot in St. George (755-0002) or donate supplies and non-perishable food through the Pennfield Lions Club (755-3713), Sea View Full Gospel (755-3592) or St. George Food Bank (455-3730).
