Ross Hat Trick Drives 8-4 Victory Over Greyhounds

The Saginaw Spirit doubled-up on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds with a score of 8-4 Wednesday night at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw. Garret Ross earned the game's first star honors his first OHL career hat trick, marking a unique trend that has seen Spirit hat tricks tallied in the last three consecutive games. Josh Shalla followed up his four goal effort from Saturday with two goals on the night as well. The Spirit lead the OHL Western Conference with 42 points and a record of 19-5-3-1.

Both teams traded goals in the first period, making the game a 2-2 contest in the first 20:00 minutes. Greyhounds winger Jake Carrick scored a goal at 6:27 in the first from center Brett Thompson to open scoring. The Spirit were quick to respond, with winger Garret Ross notching a goal to make it a 1-1 tied at 7:13 in the first, courtesy assists from center Vince Trocheck and winger Josh Shalla. The back-and-forth scoring would continue, with Greyhounds center Daniel Catenacci moving the score 2-1 with a goal at the 9:11 mark from winger Jake Carrick and defenseman Brock Beukeboom. Spirit winger Brandon Saad rounded out first period scoring and tied up the game at two apiece with a goal at 15:39 in the frame from winger Jordan Szwarz and center Mather Sisca.

The Greyhounds would jump to a two goal advantage in the opening three minutes of the second period, taking the score to 4-2. Soo winger Trevor Morbeck tallied a goal at 2:14 from center Nick Cousins and winger Rudy Sulmonte to make it 3-2, then :32 seconds later winger Chad Thibodeau advance the Greyhound lead with a goal from Catenacci and winger Egor Omelyanenko.

The Spirit quickly responded to the tune of six unanswered goals, four of which came in the span of four minutes and thirty-nine seconds. Ross tallied his second of the night at 3:28 in the second period, an un-assisted marker that reduced the deficit to 4-3. Winger Michael Kantor would even up the contest less than a minute at 4:32 from center Ivan Telegin and center Mathew Sisca. The Spirit continued to score, with Szwarz knocking in his ninth of the season from winger Anthony Camara and defenseman Ryan O'Connor at 5:03. Shalla capped off second period scoring with a goal at 8:07 from O'Connor and Telegin. The second period ended 6-4 Saginaw.

Saginaw continued to control the scoring in the third period, sending in two more markers to secure the 8-4 win. Shalla would notch a power play marker at 13:44 from Saad and Sisca, and moments later Ross would knock in a power play goal for his first OHL career hat trick. The goal, which came at 14:39 in the third, was assisted by goalie Mavric Parks.

Spirit goalie Mavric Parks netted 20 saves on 24 shots while Greyhounds netminder Matt Murray tallied 32 saves on 40 shots.
