Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY took an early lead on Sunday and Rochester, and then posed a third period rally to defeat Rochester 4-3 at Blue Cross Arena.
The BEARS came out with terrific offensive pressure, firing 16 first period shots at Rochester goaltender Jacob Markstrom, but the game remained scoreless after one period. Keith Aucoin ended the scoring drought in the game quickly in the second period with his second goal of the year low in the left circle at 1:01 of the frame. The reigning AHL most valuable player then struck for his second of the game and third of the season when he scored short-handed at 12:43 of the period. Rochester defenseman Nathan Paetsch tried to send a pass along the blue line at the right point when Aucoin intercepted and took it the distance to score off Markstrom. The goal staked the Chocolate and White to a 2-0 lead.
Rochester then turned the tables late in the second, scoring three times to take a lead to intermission. Michael Duco started the comeback with a tip in front of Braden Holtby at 13:32, and just over a minute later at 14:41, Chris Clackson tipped a Michael Repik pass into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Before the period ended, Amerks defenseman Clay Wilson blasted a power play goal short side past Holtby to give the home team the lead at 3-2. For the second straight night, the BEARS went to the third period trailing by a 3-2 count.
HERSHEY regained its offensive touch in the final 20 minutes, tying the game with a goal from defenseman Brian Fahey at 9:42. Mathieu Perreault and Francois Bouchard assisted on the game-tying strike. Late in the third period, Andrew Gordon picked up his first goal of the season at a most opportune time, scoring with just 2:19 left to earn the win for the BEARS. Mark French's team improves to 1-0-0-1, and takes over sole possession of first place in the East Division heading into the second week of the season. Goaltender Braden Holtby made 19 saves to earn his first win of the season. Markstrom suffered his first loss in two decisions.
BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game:
1. Keith Aucoin (Two goals, one short-handed)
2. Andrew Gordon (Game winner late in the third)
3. Clay Wilson (Gave Rochester its only lead in the game)
Notes: HERSHEY and Rochester wore AHL 75th anniversary throwback jerseys for the game. Both teams will don the same sweaters when the two teams meet Saturday night in HERSHEY'S 2010-11 home opener at Giant Center. Grant McNeill saw his first game action of the year in the game, as did defenseman Joe Finley. With the win, the BEARS enter the second week of the season all alone in first place in the East Division standings. The Chocolate and White will wrap up a three-game season opening road trip Friday at Binghamton against the Senators. Faceoff at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena is at 7:05 p.m.
