Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A titanic home run by Everett Williams and a shutout led by RHP Matt Lollis propelled the TinCaps to a 1-0 win over the Great Lakes Loons, Wednesday at Parkview Field.
With the win, Fort Wayne takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three playoff series.
The Loons had their chances; with a runner at second and two outs in the second inning, Brian Ruggiano hit a ground ball to the right side. Jeudy Valdez made a diving stop to keep the ball on the infield for a single, saving a potential run. Lollis induced a lineout from the next hitter to end the inning.
In the fourth, Great Lakes had runners at the corners with nobody out but an infield popout, a caught stealing and a strikeout short-circuited the rally.
Williams came up with one out in the fifth inning and hammered a 1-0 pitch well over the rightfield wall to give the TinCaps the lead. Fort Wayne loaded the bases later in the inning on a trio of walks, but RHP Allen Webster worked out of trouble to keep it a one-run game.
The TinCaps threatened again in the sixth thanks to a leadoff double from Edinson Rincon, but failed to score. Great Lakes squandered a chance in the top of the seventh with two on and one out.
RHPs Stiven Osuna and Miles Mikolas combined on a pair of perfect innings to close out the victory.
Lollis (6-2) worked six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts to pick up the win. Webster (12-10) absorbed the loss despite five strong innings. Mikolas grabbed his 14th save of the year.
Fort Wayne's record improved to 78-63 for the season. The Loons fell to 90-50 for the year.
The TinCaps continue the best-of-three playoff series against the Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) Thursday at Dow Diamond in Midland, Mich., at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula (8-5) takes the ball against Great Lakes LHP Greg Wilborn (4-2).
