Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians MVP Brandon Moss and Rookie of the Year Alex Presley, headline a group of eight Tribe players that also includes RHP Brad Lincoln, INF Pedro Ciriaco, LHP Justin Thomas, C Jason Jaramillo, RHP Steven Jackson and RHP Brian Bass that were promoted to the Pittsburgh Pirates today.
Ciriaco, Jaramillo, Lincoln and Thomas were all recalled as each was already on the Pirates 40-Man roster, while Presley, Moss, Bass and Jackson each had their contract purchased after room was made on the 40-man roster when RHP Ross Ohlendorf and INF Jeff Clement were transferred to the 60-day disabled list and INF Akinori Iwamura and C Erik Kratz were each designated for assignment.
Moss, who became the first Tribe player to lead the league in RBI (96) since Indianapolis joined the International League and the first Indians player overall since Champ Summers led the American Association with 124 in 1978, was rewarded with his first call to the Pirates this season. The left handed slugger, who also paced the Indians in 2010 with 136 games played, 73 runs, 133 hits, 32 doubles, 235 total bases and a career-best 22 home runs, makes the return trip to Pittsburgh after spending all of 2009 and 45 games in 2008 with the Pirates.
Presley, who led all Pirates' Minor Leaguers with 166 hits and a .320 batting average between his time with Double-A Altoona and Triple-a Indianapolis, is being rewarded with his first ever Major League call-up. The speedy center fielder, whose hit total tied him with OF Nate McLouth for the fifth highest total by a Pittsburgh Minor Leaguer since 1995, posted career high totals nearly across the board, including his 86 runs scored and 85 RBI which finished as the second and fourth best total in the Pirates' organization this season.
Ciriaco, who was acquired along with C Chris Snyder from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization at the July 31st trade deadline also joins Moss and Presley as a first-time call-up to the Pirates this season. In just 32 games with the Tribe, the speedy infielder hit .281 (34-for-121) with 19 runs, nine doubles, six RBI and five stolen bases.
The five other Indians' players receiving the end of season call will all be making return trips to Pittsburgh as Lincoln, Thomas, Jaramillo, Jackson and Bass have all spent a portion of time with the Pirates already this season.
Lincoln began the season with a strong showing in Indianapolis (6-2, 3.16 ERA) before receiving the call to Pittsburgh on June 9, where he struggled, posting a 1-4 record and 6.57 ERA over nine starts, before being sent back to the Indians on July 27.
Jaramillo, who began the season as the back-up catcher with the Pirates, posted a .148 average with one home run and six RBI over 28 games from April 8 to August 1, before being optioned to Indianapolis on August 5, where he finished out the season with the Tribe by hitting .239 (21-for-88) with three runs, one home run and 13 RBI in 25 games.
Thomas turned his spectacular numbers out of the Indians' bullpen (5-0 record, 2.48 ERA (15 ER in 54.1 IP) and 51 to 10 strikeout to walk ratio) into three separate calls to Pittsburgh already this season, where he posted a 6.75 ERA (8 ER in 10.2 IP) over eight appearances out of the Pirates' pen. While on a similar route fellow reliever Steven Jackson used his 4-0 record and 3.51 ERA (22 ER in 56.1 IP) over 41 appearances with Indianapolis to also receive three separate calls up the Majors, where he turned in a 0-1 record and 11.57 ERA (9 ER in 7.0 IP) over six appearances with the Pirates.
Finally, reliever Brian Bass used three, three-inning relief outings for the Tribe in April to gain a call of his own to the big leagues, where in three outings out of the Bucs' bullpen he posted a 12.79 ERA (9 ER in 6.1 IP).
Overall with the eight call-ups, including the three for the first time, the Indians now finish the season with 23 different players having received at least one call-up to the Majors this season.
