HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Kyler Newby matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts as the BayBears slammed the Huntsville Stars on Monday afternoon at Joe W. Davis Stadium in a 6-1 victory to finish the regular season.

Konrad Schmidt belted his 11th home run of the season to put the BayBears (75-62, 39-30) on top in the second against starter Michael Bowman (9-13). Huntsville (67-73, 34-36) marched right back in the bottom of the second against Newby (4-3) with a Taylor Green home run to straightaway center.

Newby wasn't touched again as he limited the Stars to just three hits in his five frames while working up his second 10-strikeout performance of the season. Newby was handed the lead in the fourth when Ryan Wheeler cracked a dinger. Newby then bunted home Chris Rahl to put the visitors up by two.

For the second straight day, the BayBears added runs late against the Huntsville bullpen. Sean Coughlin doubled home Ollie Linton in the seventh while the BayBears picked up another pair in the eighth as Bryan Woodall's infield single drew Rahl to the dish. Evan Frey's sac fly knocked in Dan Kaczrowski.

Daniel Stange, Woodall, Josh Ellis and Jeff Dietz combined to close out the Stars over the final four innings. The BayBears' pitching staff ended up tying a season-high with 16 strikeouts in the contest. With 75 victories, the BayBears picked up the third-highest win total in franchise history.

They will open the South Division Championship Series on Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds against the Jacksonville Suns, who were division winners in both halves. Games one and two will be played in Jacksonville while game three will shift to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, September 11 at 7:05 p.m. Games four and five would be played if necessary back in Jacksonville.
