Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA - After nearly three weeks of little pop, the Red Sox sticks came to life on Sunday afternoon, earning a cathartic doubleheader sweep of the Winston-Salem Dash at Lewis-Gale Field. In the opener, Mark Holliman tossed just the fourth individual complete game shutout in the Carolina League this season, blanking the Dash 3-0. The Sox followed that up with eight extra-base hits in the nightcap, including two apiece for Mitch Dening and Ronald Bermudez, as Salem prevailed 8-1. Winston needed only one win or an Indians loss to lock up the second-half crown, but Kinston no-hit Potomac in a 1-0 victory, while the Dash were dealt dual defeats by the Sox.

Holliman was sensational in his seven-inning masterpiece, yielding just two hits to the league's top offense. With seven strikeouts and only one walk, he improved his record to 4-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.81. The Red Sox won all seven of Holliman's Carolina League starts in 2010.

Oscar Tejeda went 3-3 to raise his average to .307, while the Sox scored single runs in three separate innings against Winston-Salem starter Nate Jones. The Dash righthander surrendered three runs on six hits over six innings, also earning a complete game in defeat. The opener lasted just one hour and 28 minutes, the shortest game for both clubs on the season.

In game two, Salem scored at least one run in five consecutive innings, a refreshing change of pace after scoring just 30 runs in the previous 13 games. Drew Hedman led off the second with a triple against Jake Rasner, promptly scoring on the ensuing double from Bermudez. Later in the inning, Dening rocketed a two-out, two-bagger into the gap to score two more runs and give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

Bermudez clocked another RBI double in the third, scoring Adalberto Ibarra from second to make it 4-0. In the fourth, Ryan Dent clobbered a Rasner offering for his sixth homer of the year, a solo blast that gave Salem a 5-0 lead. The Sox added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth.

Starter Seth Garrison allowed just one run in four innings, while Pat Ryan picked up the victory with three scoreless frames in relief. Ryan moved his record to 2-1 and shrunk his ERA to 0.70.

Heading into the final day of the regular season, the Red Sox are guaranteed to finish with the second-best full-season record in the Carolina League. Currently sitting at 73-64 (31-36 in the second half), Salem looks to finish ten above .500 with another victory over the Dash on Monday. The Labor Day finale is scheduled for 12:05 at Lewis-Gale Field, with Miguel Gonzalez expected to start for Salem opposite Winston's Joe Serafin.
