Springfield Cardinals News Release

Little Rock, AR - Still waiting to know their playoffs fate, the Cardinals took the field Sunday afternoon looking to set a Springfield record for regular season wins.

Springfield jumped out to a quick lead as Pete Kozma doubled with one out and Andrew Brown drove him home with a two-out RBI double off for Travs' starter Trevor Reckling to take a 1-0 advantage.

The lead would not last long however, as Charlton Jimerson blasted a lead off home run to tie the game 1-1.

The Travs would take their first lead of the series in the 2nd inning as Trey Hearne walked the lead off batter then allowed a single to Abel Nieves. Beau Brooks then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by catcher Nick Derba and thrown down the right field line allowing the go-ahead run to score and put runners on second and 3rd. Rian Kiniry then bounced into a fielder's choice allowing the Cardinals to get the first out of the inning as Xavier Scruggs threw a runner out at the plate. With runners still at second and third, Charlton Jimerson lifted a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Brooks to go up 3-1. With two outs, Carlos Colmenares doubled down the right field line to score Kiniry from third giving the Travs a 4-1 lead.

Hearne would last just one more inning pitching through the 3rd inning allowing four runs, only one earned on four hits while walking four. Tom Eager came in out of the bullpen in the 4th and Travelers did not greet him well. Eager allowed three straight singles including an RBI hit from Andrew Romine before the right hander retired Roberto Lopez on a fly ball to right field for the first out of the inning. Jeremy Moore would then strike out, but was able to reach first as the ball got away from catch Nick Derba allowing a run to score and put runners on the corners. Efren Navarro then singled scoring Romine from third and moved Moore to third. Still with only one out, Abel Nieves hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Moore to give the Travelers an 8-1 lead.

Jason Buursma then gave the Cardinals two scoreless innings out of the bullpen allowing just one hit. Ramon Delgado pitched a scoreless 7th allowing just a single and Blake King followed with a perfect 8th to keep the game at an 8-1 score.

The Cardinals struggled all afternoon against Trevor Reckling and the Travelers bullpen getting just the first inning run and the Redbirds had just one hit after the second inning.

Springfield will play their final the regular season game in 2010 against the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey Stephens Park on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals will send left hander Scott McGregor (7-4) to the mound against right hander Tim Kiely (6-10) for the Travs. Game time is at 1:00pm.

The Cardinals playoffs hopes are no longer in their own control as it will take a Tulsa loss in the next two games in order to make Springfield a playoff team for the second straight season. Springfield secured the second best record in the North Division and the only way the Cardinals would not go to the post season is if the Tulsa Drillers win the second half. NW Arkansas is up 2 games on the Drillers in the division with two games to games to play and the two will meet head to head to finish the regular season. Tulsa must sweep the series in order for the Cardinals to be left out of the playoffs.

Should the Cardinals make the playoffs, they would host games three and four of the best of five game divisional series at Hammons Field on September 10th and 11th.
