Hagerstown wins over West Virginia

The West Virginia Power lost 6-5 Friday night to the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park. A late West Virginia rally could not overcome six Suns runs and four Power errors in the loss.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Evan Chambers off of Shane McCatty. The Suns starter would settle in, however, over the next four innings, striking out eight and walking none.

Hagerstown's offense got rolling in the third with one run on one hit and two errors. The Suns plated two in the fourth on two hits and a Power error, including a run-scoring single by Rick Hague. Hagerstown also scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to take a 6-1 advantage.

Kyle Morgan led off the home half of the seventh with his 11th home run of the season. Two singles and one out later, Jairo Marquez scored on a ground out to cut the deficit down the three at 6-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Rogelio Noris walked and David Rubinstein singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Morgan singled to center to drive in both runners, but was stranded on the bases on a ground out and a strikeout.

West Virginia was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth, all on strikes, to end the game.

Power starting pitcher Quinton Miller (3-6) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits over five innings. McCatty (1-1) gained the win, while Kyle Morrison earned his second save. Suns pitchers combined to strikeout 15 batters in the game. Morgan had three hits and three runs batted in to lead all players, while Rubinstein had the only other multi-hit game for the Power. Three different Suns players had two hits apiece.

The loss Friday night has guaranteed that West Virginia cannot finish the season with a winning record at home or in the second half. The Power are 31-35 at home this year, and hold an identical second half mark with three games remaining.

West Virginia and Hagerstown continue this series at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday with a 7:05 pm first pitch. Sunday's game between the Power and Suns is scheduled for 2:05 pm, while Monday's contest is slated for 1:05 pm.
