It was Hall of Fame Night and Fan Appreciation Night at Applebee's Park Friday, but once the game started, the pitchers owned the evening.

The Rome Braves scored the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning in a 1-0 win over the Lexington Legends.

Jace Whitmer led off the fifth with a double, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on a base hit by Bobby Rauh. Rome pitchers Steven Kent and Willie Kempf made the run stand up.

Kent (2-0) worked the first five innings and got the win. He allowed four hits and struck out six batters. Kempf pitched the final four innings, gave up one hit and struck out four. Neither pitcher walked a batter.

Lexington starter Juan Minaya (4-11) was tough on the Rome hitters as well, though he took the loss. Minaya pitched eight innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Before the game, J.R. Towles, a star catcher with Lexington in 2005 and 2006, was inducted into the Legends Hall of Fame. Towles batted .346 with five homers and 23 RBI in 45 games for Lexington in 2005 and came back with a .317 average, 12 homers and 55 RBI in 81 games in 2006. He also stole 11 bases for the Legends in 2005 and 13 in 2006, and won the South Atlantic League All-Star Home Run Derby in 2006. Towles made his major league debut with Houston in 2007.

The Legends and Braves will meet in the second game of a four-game series Saturday night at Applebee's Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Attendance at Applebee's Park: 5,561
