Daytona Tortugas News Release
CLEARWATER, FL - The Daytona Cubs (74-63, 40-27) dropped game one of three to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (70-66, 33-33) Friday night 2-0. The D-Cubs got great starting pitching from Brooks Raley, but Luke Putkonen simply dominated for Lakeland.
The Cubs found themselves in another pitcher's duel on Friday night against the Flying Tigers. Luke Putkonen surrendered just one Cubs hit through his first six innings and struck out two. The tall righty faced the minimum 24 batters through eight innings, but wouldn't factor into the decision.
Daytona's Brooks Raley was just about as good. The lefty surrendered just seven hits through five-plus frames and struck out seven.
The Tigers would score one run in the sixth inning and another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Raley allowed a one out double to Francisco Martinez in the sixth, and Casey Lambert allowed the go ahead RBI single to Alexander Moreno two batters later. In the seventh inning Bryan Holaday doubled to score Gustavo Nunez to give Lakeland a late 2-0 lead.
Junior Lake would force extra baseball with his 9th home run of the season with Greg Rohan on first. The home run was surrendered by Luke Putkonen the only mistake all evening to tie the game at 2-2.
Lakeland would have the last laugh however in the bottom of the 10th inning off a suicide squeeze from Luis Castillo which scored Martinez from third. David Patton (2-5) took the loss out of the bullpen with Jared Gayhart (4-4) picking up the win.
The Cubs and Tigers continue their series on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. Catch all the action on AM1340 WROD or online at www.daytonacubs.com.
