Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Chase Burch set a new Traverse City Beach Bums career homerun record with a third inning blast, but the Windy City ThunderBolts prevailed with a 14-7 win.

The Beach Bums remain tied with the Oakland County Cruisers for the wild card spot in the East Division with three games remaining on the schedule. Traverse City holds the tiebreaker against the Oakland County as the Cruisers will face Windy City at home while the Beach Bums take on the Washington Wild Things at Wuerfel Park.

Things started well for Traverse City as after both teams recorded scoreless first innings, the Beach Bums stormed out in the second as with runners on second and third and two out, Jonathan Alia lifted a single to center to score Brad Miller and Andrew Franco for a 2-0 Beach Bums lead.

TC would get another run in the inning as Matt Brown doubled home Alia for a 3-0 advantage.

Windy City would come back with a vengeance, scoring five times in the top of the third. Responding right away, Traverse City would get two in the bottom half of the inning. Leading off the frame, Chase Burch took the first pitch he saw from Sean Toler over the leftfield fence for a solo homer, his 19th of the season, setting a new team career homerun mark in the process. Two batters later, with one out, Miller walked. After a single from Franco moved Miller to third, Alia delivered again, getting a hit into leftfield to score Miller for a 5-5 tie.

Unfortunately for Traverse City, the ThunderBolts responded right away again, plating five for the second straight inning to go up 10-5. The two teams traded single runs twice the rest of the way and Windy City capped things with a two-run ninth to create the final score.

The win went to Sean Toler (8-1), despite giving up seven runs in 5.2 innings. David Slovak (2-5) took the loss for the Beach Bums.

Offensively, the Beach Bums got a pair of hits and three RBI from Jonathan Alia. Andrew Franco and Matt Brown also had multi-hit nights for TC, one of Brown's hits being a triple, tying him for the league lead.

Traverse City will now host the Washington Wild Things with the East Division Wild Card spot on the line. Enrique Lechuga (10-3, 3.02) will get the starting nod Friday for Traverse City against Justin Edwards (5-1, 3.48) for Washington. It is Outdoor Night at Wuerfel Park. Fans who wear hunting or fishing gear to the ballpark will receive half price admission on a chairback seat. Gander Mountain will be giving away "Gander Bucks" to the first 500 fans into Wuerfel Park. For tickets or information call 231-943-0100 or log on to tcbeachbums.com.
