Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Gateway Grizzlies are proud to announce that several individuals have been honored by the Frontier League, which announced its annual Post-Season Awards Thursday afternoon.
Grizzlies catcher Charlie Lisk has won the Morgan Burkhart Award, as the league's Most Valuable Player. Lisk was also selected as the catcher on the Post-Season All Star team, his third consecutive selection. Lisk, in his fourth year with the Grizzlies, is the first Gateway player to earn MVP honors.
With four games to play in the regular season, Lisk leads the Frontier League with 87 RBIs. His 21 home runs places him second in the league. He is third in the league with a .315 batting average. Lisk also leads the league with 113 hits, 203 total bases and 46 extra base hits. His 87 RBIs and 113 hits are both single-season franchise records. Lisk recently became the Frontier League's All-Time home run leader and currently has 89 in his Frontier League career.
Outfielder Jason Patton joined Lisk on the Post-Season All-Star team. Patton, in his first year with the Grizzlies, is fifth in the Frontier League with a .314 batting average.
Both Lisk and Patton were also named mid-season All-Stars in July.
Grizzlies Pitching Coach Randy Martz was selected as the Coach of the Year in the league. Martz's staff has lowered its earned run average from a league-worst 6.47 in 2009 to 4.06 currently. The honor is the first for Martz, who is in his fourth year on Manager Phil Warren's staff.
Three other members of the organization were also honored with awards. Grizzlies broadcaster Joe Pott was selected as the league's Broadcaster of the Year, Athletic Trainer Geof Manzo was named Athletic Trainer of the year and Head Groundskeeper Ben Young was chosen as Groundskeeper of the Year.
The award is the third for Pott, who was also honored in 2005 and 2006. Manzo's selection is his second. He was also honored with the award after the 2007 season.
The Grizzlies are home for the final four regular season games in 2010. The team will host Florence at 6:35 Thursday before entertaining Division-Champion Southern Illinois Friday through Sunday. Gateway is currently 1 1/2 games behind River City for the final playoff spot in the West Division.
Tickets and group packages for the regular season as well as the post-season are available by calling the Grizzlies ticket office at (618) 337-3000, online at gatewaygrizzlies.com or by stopping at the GCS Ballpark box office.
