Jason Swyripa feels he's now ready to make the jump to the Western Hockey League.
The 17-year old Calgary product made the Wheat Kings roster coming out of training camp a year ago but decided to return home for one more season at the AAA Midget level.
"It was a time where you go back and develop a l little bit more and get more seasoned at a level lower down, it was the chose I made," says Swyripa, a second round pick in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, "It helped out a lot by just making the mental side of my game stronger, putting more work athic into the little things and focusing on making it to this next level and being here with the Wheat Kings."
Swyripa extra year with the UFA Bisons of the Alberta Midget Hockey League turned out to be a good one.
After an early season shoulder injury sidelined him for close to two months, Swyripa notched 25 goals and 43 points in 27 regular season games and was also named the MVP at the prestigious Mac's Midget Tournament last December.
The 5-foot-8, 160 Swyripa is tremendously skilled and in the new age of hockey, that should translate into success at the WHL level despite his small stature.
"Everyone will always tell you you're too small, too this, too that," says Swyripa, "Everyone will face criticism, whether they're 6-foot-5 or whatever so you just have to work through it. I don't think it's much of an impact as long as you work hard."
Swyripa has already been in Brandon for a week in preparation for training camp.
