Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Miners were handed their worst loss in franchise history as Gateway defeated Southern Illinois, 16-0, Saturday night at Rent One Park. Randy Johnson made the start for Southern Illinois and allowed 10 runs, six earned of them earned, off 10 hits en route to his second loss with the Miners. Adrian Garza grabbed his first victory of the season for the Grizzlies, working six scoreless frames. Southern Illinois scratched across just three hits, as they were held scoreless for the sixth time this season. With the loss, the 2010 West Division Champions dropped their record to 60-29 on the season.

Every starter had a hit for Gateway, pounding out 19 total hits for their 16 runs, both new season records for the Miners pitching staff. Charlie Lisk blasted his 20th home run of the season in the sixth inning. The Frontier League's all-time home run leader has now recorded 20 home runs in three consecutive seasons. Gordie Gronkowski swatted a solo home run to begin the Gateway barrage, giving the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tyler Heil led the charge with four hits in four at-bats. Logan Parker, Lisk, Gronkowski, Breck Draper and Landon Hernandez all had multiple-hit games Saturday night.

Adrian Garza was very effective for his first win with Gateway. The right-hander went six strong innings, allowing no runs off just three hits. Garza stuck out three Miners, while yielding just one walk.

Lanell McGee entered the game as a defensive replacement for the Miners in the sixth inning and recorded his first hit in a Miners uniform, snapping an 0-for-15 skid to start his Southern Illinois career.

Randy Johnson picked up his second loss with the Miners, in just under a week. Johnson was nearly out of the third inning with the Miners deficit at just one run. However, a two-out throwing error by Brad Netzel opened the flood gates for the Grizzlies as they plated three unearned runs in the inning. Gateway was held scoreless in just two of the nine innings of Saturday's game.

Miners designated hitter Tyler Bullock finally ended a streak of six consecutive innings in which the Grizzlies scored a run when Bullock tossed a perfect ninth inning. He then singled in the bottom of the ninth.

In Game-3 of the series, Eric Fussell (5-3, 4.68) will be on the mound for his first start since Aug. 2 after returning from the injured list earlier this week. Righty Tim Clubb (7-5, 3.70) will be on the bump for the Grizzlies, as they try for the three-game sweep of Southern Illinois. First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Rent One Park.
