Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - D'Vontrey Richardson delivered a two run double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a 6-5 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night at Perfect Game Field. Richardson had three doubles in the game to help give Wisconsin only their second win in 10 tries in Cedar Rapids.
The Kernels tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth and with runners at second and third and two out, Jon Pokorny got Casey Haerther to strike out and end the game. Eric Arnett (1-9) pitched two innings of relief for his first win and Pokorny notched his 16th save. Johnny Hellweg (1-4) took the loss, giving up two runs on one hit, striking out one and walking three over a third of an inning.
The stunning comeback by Wisconsin spoiled a good effort by Kernels starter Tyler Kehrer, who allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out ten over 6 IP. The Kernels had 10 hits in the game with six going for doubles. Michael Wing and Jon Karcich both had two doubles as Randal Grichuk went 1-4 with a double and Jeremy Cruz was 1-5 with a double.
Justin Bass was 2-4 with an RBI and Matt Long was 1-3 with an RBI and stolen base. Hunter Morris went 2-5 with a HR, triple and 2 RBI for Wisconsin.
The loss drops the Kernels to 31-24 in the second half and 74-49 overall. It also drop the Kernels a game behind Quad Cities for the best overall record in the MWL West, which could come into play should both the Kernels and River Bandits meet in the second round of the MWL Playoffs, as the team with the best overall record has the home field advantage. Wisconsin improves to 26-30 and 52-72 as they look to make a run at a second half playoff spot.
