South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The three runs scored by the South Bend Silver Hawks in the first two innings were enough for reliever Derek Eitel, as he closed the door over the final five innings in a 3-2 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Tuesday night.

Eitel (WP, 2-0) inherited a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning and went the rest of the way, allowing just one run and striking out seven. The first athlete ever drafted out of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Eitel struck out the side in the ninth to get his second win in his second appearance for South Bend.

Eitel has pitched 5.0 innings in each of his first two outings in relief of Tyler Skaggs (ND), and the two are expected to continue as a lefty/righty tandem.

Skaggs, acquired in the Dan Haren trade, impressed in his home debut with 4.0 innings of one-run ball as he continues to build back to a normal pitch count after being held out of action over the course of three weeks around the trading deadline. The left-handed starter struck out three and walked one in his second start for the Silver Hawks.

South Bend scored twice in the first inning against Bowling Green starter Matt Suarez (LP, 0-5). Keon Broxton walked to start the inning (one of three walks for Broxton on Tuesday) and moved to third on a Chris Jarrett single. David Nick brought home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

After Jarrett was caught stealing, Bobby Borchering launched a solo home run to right to make it 2-0. It was Borchering's second home run in as many nights and his fifth against the Hot Rods this season. The switch-hitting slugger now has 13 home runs on the season.

Errol Hollinger started the second inning rally with a single, moving to second on a single from David Narodowski. A fielder's choice and error got Hollinger home with the unearned run proving to be the difference in the game.

Ty Morrison had two RBI singles for Bowling Green, but that was the only runs the Hot Rods could muster. South Bend won three of the four games in the series.

The Silver Hawks continue the home stand with the first of three against the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) on Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. RHP Adam Worthington (4-5, 4.93 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend against Dayton's RHP Daniel Corcino (1-0, 1.08 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
