BURLINGTON, VT --- Chris Hilliard allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings and Patrick Farrell had a two-run homer to lead the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 6-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in a matchup of two New York-Penn League division leaders at historic Centennial Field on Friday night.
Brooklyn (40-20) entered the game with a 9 1/2 game lead in the McNamara Division and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a bases loaded walk to Cody Holliday in the top of the second inning. The Cyclones then added a pair of runs in the third on a wild pitch and another bases loaded walk to James Schroeder for a 3-0 lead.
Farrell increased the advantage to 5-0 in the fifth inning with his first home run for Brooklyn in just his second game with the Cyclones. He launched a 2-2 pitch from reliever Wilson Eusebio over the soccer press box beyond the leftfield fence.
The Lake Monsters scored their only run of the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from David Freitas, while Brooklyn got a sacrifice fly of its own in the seventh from Will Cherry to close out the scoring.
Hilliard (8-1) picked up his league-leading eighth win of the season, while Nelson Pereira did not allow a hit and struckout three in three perfect innings of relief for his first save of the season. The two Brooklyn pitchers did not issue a walk in the game, marking the first time this season that a Vermont batter did not reach base by a walk.
The two teams combined for just 11 hits in the game as three Vermont pitchers combined to allow just six hits to a Brooklyn team that came into the contest leading the league with a .288 team batting average. Starter Aaron Barrett (0-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings for the loss. Chad Jenkins struckout two over two scoreless innings in his first relief appearance for Vermont after 11 games.
Vermont (30-28) continues to hold on to first-place in the Stedler Division despite the loss to the Cyclones. The Lake Monsters are now one game in front of Connecticut (30-30) and 1 1/2 games ahead of Tri-City (29-30).
Vermont and Brooklyn will play the second of the three-game series on Saturday beginning at 6:05 pm and will be followed immediately by a post-game fireworks show at Centennial Field.
