State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped off by two plays at the plate and Adalberto Santos's RBI single, to down the Jamestown Jammers, 7-6, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
State College (28-30) entered the seventh inning down 4-3, and saw Jamestown (35-23) score a pair of runs in the top half of the frame to extend its lead. However, Gift Ngoepe got things going for the Spikes with an infield single, and scored on Matt Skirving's double to bring State College within a 6-4 margin.
Walker Gourley then provided his second double of the game to plate Skirving, followed by a two-out single by Mel Rojas, Jr. that scored Gourley when he slid under the tag of Jammers catcher Dallas Hord. Rojas then crossed home plate just ahead of the throw on Santos's single for the game-winning run.
Santos finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Gourley also knocked in a pair of runs on his two doubles, while Skirving went 2-for-3 with two doubles as well.
Drew Maggi, the Pittsburgh Pirates' 15th-round draft pick in 2010 out of Arizona State, started and hit leadoff in his first game with the Spikes, going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Brooks Pounders (3-2) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks. Brian Townsend (5) closed the door on the Jammers in the ninth, allowing two hits but gaining the final three outs to preserve the Spikes' victory.
Jammers reliever Jeremy Heatley (3-2) took the loss in relief, allowing all four Spikes runs in the seventh inning. Heatley went a total of two innings and yielded four hits while striking out four.
The Spikes and Jammers will finish up their three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday. State College will send left-hander Colton Cain (0-1) to the mound to face Jamestown right-hander Adam Veres (3-1).
