Rizzo Named Eastern League Player of the Week

Portland, Maine- The Eastern League has announced that Portland Sea Dogs' first baseman Anthony Rizzo has been selected the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of August 2nd through August 8th.

The 6'3", 220 lb. slugger had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, batting .444 (12-for-27) with four doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, seven runs scored and a .926 slugging percentage over six games. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native kicked off his week by going 4-for-5 with three doubles, four RBI and three runs scored in a 14-8 victory against Bowie on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Anthony turned 21 years old on Sunday and celebrated with his second four hit game of the week, going 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in a 16-8 loss against visiting Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Rizzo ranked first among all Eastern League players in RBI (12) and total bases (25) last week and tied for first in hits (12), extra-base hits (7) and home runs (3). He also finished tied for third in runs scored (7), ranked fourth in slugging percentage (.926) and OPS (1.370) and tied for fourth in doubles (4).

The first baseman began the 2010 season with Single-A Salem and earned a promotion to Double-A Portland on May 10th. He has appeared in 81 games for the Sea Dogs hitting .271 (87-for-320) with a team leading 14 home runs and 56 RBI. Combined between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland, on the season Rizzo leads all Red Sox minor leaguers with 19 home runs and ranks third in RBI with 76. He is hitting .327 with 11 doubles, five home runs and 24 RBI in 23 games since the All-Star Break.

Baseball America ranks Rizzo as the eighth best prospect in the Red Sox organization. In 2009, he was a South Atlantic League All-Star. He was selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

Rizzo is the first Sea Dogs player this season to take home Eastern League Player of the Week honors. The last Sea Dog to do so was Aaron Bates for the week of May 25th through May 31st, 2009.

The Portland Sea Dogs begin a six game road trip to Bowie, Maryland and Richmond, Virginia on Tuesday. The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for a six game homestand on Tuesday, August 17th at 7:00 PM against the Altoona Curve (Pirates). Only 14 home games remain on the 2010 schedule.
