International Leagues Players Of The Week
Published on August 9, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Pawtucket outfielder Josh Reddick and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Jason Hirsh have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 2-8. Hirsh's honor represents the fourth time this season the Pitcher of the Week Award has gone to a Scranton/WB hurler, all coming within the last five weeks (Jonathan Albaladejo, July 5-11 and July 15-18, and Tim Redding, July 26-Aug. 1). Reddick is the first member of the PawSox to win an IL weekly award in 2010.
Pawtucket's Josh Reddick hit .464 over the past six games, leading the League for the week with three home runs, 10 RBI, and 13 hits. His claim on the Batter of the Week Award was staked early, and he never looked back. Monday against the IL South leading Durham Bulls, Reddick led a PawSox offensive explosion. He collected four hits and was robbed of a fifth on a diving catch by shortstop Elliot Johnson, but still finished with a single, two doubles, a homer, five RBI, and two runs scored in the 12-0 Pawtucket victory. Reddick went on to collect multiple hits in each of the next three games, including a home run on Tuesday and another on Friday. By week's end, Reddick had increased his season's batting average by 20 points.
23-year-old Josh Reddick is in his fourth season of professional baseball. Selected by the Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2006 draft out of Middle Georgia College, he rocketed through the organization all the way to Boston, where he played 27 games last year and 11 more so far this season. Reddick is a native of Savannah, Georgia.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre right-hander Jason Hirsh won a pair of games for the first place Yankees this week, while tying for the League lead with 14 strikeouts. Each win helped put more distance between the Yankees and their opponents in the IL North. On Tuesday at Syracuse, Hirsh tossed five shutout innings against the Chiefs in a 5-3 SWB win, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out five. Then on Sunday afternoon at Pawtucket, Hirsh was more than adequate in a 12-3 Yankees victory. He went a season-high 8.0 innings and struck out a season-high nine batters to improve his record to 8-7 and bring his ERA under 4.00 for the first time since May.
26-year-old Jason Hirsh is in his eighth season as a professional pitcher. He was acquired by the Yankees in a late-July trade from Colorado a year ago. He has seen action in the Major Leagues with the Astros (2006) and Rockies (2007-08). Hirsh is a native of Burbank, CA.
