Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that OF Randal Grichuk rejoins the Kernels from the AZL Angels; OF Richard Cates has been promoted to Rancho Cucamonga; and LHP Tyler Skaggs has been removed from the roster and will join the South Bend Silver Hawks. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Saturday.

Grichuk went on the DL back on May 10 with a right thumb strain. In 29 games for the Kernels, he hit .229 with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBI. He was activated from the DL and sent to Tempe on August 4 and in 12 games (rehab & roster) he hit .327 with 4 HR and 10 RBI.

Cates hit .270 in 19 games for the Kernels with three doubles and 11 RBI. He was selected by the Angels in the 21st round of the 2009 Free Agent Draft out of Cal State Northridge.

Skaggs was the 'player to be named later' in the Angels' trade with the Diamondbacks for Dan Haren. He pitched in 19 games for the Kernels (14 starts) with an 8-4 record and 3.61 ERA in 82.1 IP. The Angels selected Skaggs in the Supplemental Round of the 2009 Free Agent Draft out of Santa Monica (CA) HS and he was tabbed as the Angels No. 8 Top Prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2010 season.

With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at 24 active players, one short of the MWL maximum of 25, with two players currently on the disabled list.

The Kernels open a seven game home stand tonight against Beloit at Perfect Game Field with post-game fireworks presented by Z 102.9 and J&M Displays. Gates open at 5:30 and first pitch is set for 6:35 pm. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
