Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Caleb Clay was unable to work past the fourth inning and the Red Sox struck out 15 times and fell to the Frederick Keys 5-3 on Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The two squads combined to go just 4-for-20 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 21 runners on base.
Both teams had numerous opportunities in the three-hour, seven-minute affair, with the clubs leaving the bases loaded a combined three times. Despite jumping out in front for just the third time in the last 15 games, the Sox pitching staff wasn't able to hold back the stout Frederick lineup on every single run-scoring occasion.
Ryan Dent's one-out RBI double in the second scored Alex Hassan to give the Sox a 1-0 lead, but Salem stranded the bases loaded as Mitch Dening grounded out to end the threat. The missed opportunity would loom large as the Keys responded with two in the bottom half of the second. Buck Britton tied the game at one with an RBI groundout, while Brian Ward laced an RBI double down the left field line to give Frederick a 2-1 lead. The Keys extended their advantage an inning later as Billy Rowell singled home Ronnie Welty to put Frederick up 3-1. Rowell was eventually thrown out at home by Mitch Dening when he attempted to tag up and score on Miguel Abreu's fly ball.
Frederick starter Nathan Moreau, who threw a no-hitter against Salem on June 30, did not make it out of the fourth inning in this start, as the Sox once again loaded the bases in the fourth off the lefthander. However, Salem was only able to scratch across a single run on a wild pitch by reliever Cole McCurry, who came on with two outs in the inning. After the wild pitch moved the go-ahead runs into scoring position, McCurry struck out Dening to retire the side with Salem still trailing by one.
An inning later, the Keys got to reliever Seth Garrison as Pedro Florimon singled in two runs with a two-out base knock up the middle to put Frederick up 5-2. Garrison gave up two runs in his two innings, walking four Frederick hitters and giving up two base hits.
The Sox got a run back in the seventh inning on a double from Hassan, as Middlebrooks scored all the way from first when left fielder Kyle Hudson fumbled the ball in the left field corner. However, Salem stranded two more runners to increase their total to 10 on the night.
Brett Jacobson came on to shut down Salem in the final two and a third innings to seal the deal for Frederick. The Sox struck out 15 times and were a paltry 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. McCurry picked up the victory for Frederick with three solid innings of relief, as he struck out seven Salem batters.
The top four hitters in the Salem order combined to go 2-for-19 with 11 strikeouts on the night. Hassan and Dent were the lone Sox with multi-hit games, as both added a double to the eight-hit attack.
Clay was shaky in his four innings on the mound, as he fell to 4-10 on the year. The righthander gave up three runs on eight hits, striking out just one while walking two.
Frederick had a big night on the base paths, stealing five bags, three by Kyle Hudson alone. Hudson's three steals gave him 30 for the year, tops in the Carolina League. The five stolen bases against the Sox set a new season-high allowed.
The two 60-win ball clubs battle again on Tuesday night in the middle-matchup at Harry Grove Stadium. Miguel Gonzalez steps to the mound for the Sox against Frederick's Oliver Drake, with first pitch set for 7:00 PM.
