Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Quad Cities River Bandits scored three runs in the top of the 16th inning to break a 5-5 tie as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-5 on Sunday night before a crowd of 9,226 at Fifth Third Field.
The game, which lasted five hours and 21 minutes, was the longest game of the season for the Dragons, and one of the longest in franchise history.
The score was tied at 5-5 when Quad Cities loaded the bases in the top of the 16th inning. With two outs, Luis Mateo hit a high fly ball to right-center field. Dragons center fielder Andrew Means lost the ball in the twilight and it fell without being touched. All three runners scored to give the River Bandits their first lead of the game.
The Dragons did not score in the bottom of the 16th as they suffered a heart-breaking loss.
Things looked promising for the Dragons early in the game. The Dragons took their first lead of the current home stand by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Means drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Cameron Satterwhite, Means scored on a Mark Fleury bloop-single. Satterwhite took third on the play, and scored on a similar hit off the bat of Frank Pfister.
The Dragons extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Henry Rodriguez connected on a base hit with one out and stole second. Two batters later, Fleury produced his second RBI of the game by doubling to left field. Fleury then scored when Pfister drove in his second run with a single to left.
The River Bandits got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, C.J. Beatty reached on a single to right field, and advanced to third on an infield single by Edgar Lara. Beatty then came home on a passed ball to make it 4-1.
Quad Cities cut the Dragons' lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Beatty launched a solo home run with one out, his fifth of the season. However, the Dragons got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Jonathan Kaskow belted his first home run as a Dragon off Bandits reliever Michael Blazek to put Dayton ahead 5-2.
The River Bandits scored two more runs in the top of the seventh against Dragons reliever Kevin Arico to pull to within one run. Ted Obregon reached on a one-out single, stole second, took third on a throwing error by Fleury. Alan Ahmady then drove in Obregon on a double to right, to trim the Dragons lead to 5-3. Matt Adams singled to center to drive in Ahmady to make it 5-4. Quad Cities tied the game in the seventh on a home run by Edgar Lara off Arico.
The Dragons had a chance to capture the win in the bottom of the ninth. Means drew a lead-off walk, and Ryan LaMarre reached on a bunt single. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice by Rodriguez. But Satterwhite grounded out, and after Fleury was intentionally walked to load the bases, Pfister grounded out and the game headed to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 14th, the Dragons squandered another chance to win. LaMarre singled to left, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Bandits catcher Richard Stock. The Dragons failed to capitalize, as Rodriguez grounded out, Fleury hit into a fielder's choice, and Pfister popped out to end the inning.
The Dragons were retired in order in the 15th before Quad Cities broke the tie in the 16th.
The game ended just 12 minutes shy of the Dragons record of five hours and 33 minutes, set back in the 2004 season.
The Dragons (8-20) battle the River Bandits (18-9) on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the final game of a three-game set. Homer Bailey, currently on the Reds disabled list with a shoulder injury, will make a rehabilitation start for Dayton against Shelby Miller (3-4, 4.04), the top prospect in the Cardinals farm system.
