Everett AquaSox News Release
KEIZER, Ore. - Chris Sorce allowed five runs, four earned, in only three innings of work as the Everett AquaSox (24-11) fell to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (17-18) at Volcanoes Stadium 6-4.
The AquaSox have now lost two series in 2010, and are 13-2 against Western division opponents.
Salem-Keizer got off to a fast start, striking with runs in the first three innings. Sorce, who had only walked 11 batters in six prior outings, walked four straight to hand the Volcanoes their first run. Chris Lofton connected on an infield single in the second that scored an unearned run following a Kevin Rivers error in right.
Back-to-back doubles in the third inning by Adam Duvall and Alexander Burg plated three more for the Volcanoes, leaving the score at 5-1 after three.
The AquaSox took advantage of two errors in the fifth inning, narrowing the score to 5-3. Terry Serrano scored on a throwing error by third baseman Raynor Campbell and Rivers delivered a sacrifice fly to account for the Sox runs.
Steven Baron doubled in the sixth inning, extending his modest seven-game hitting streak and bringing the Frogs back from four down to within one run.
That's all the offense the Sox would get, however, as the relief combination of Jake Dunning and Stephen Harrold held Everett without a run in the final three innings. Salem-Keizer starter Kevin Couture (3-2, 3.49 ERA) earned the win after five innings, eight hits and two earned runs allowed.
Sorce (3-1, 4.42 ERA) struggled mightily in his worst outing of the season, taking the loss after tossing three innings, allowing five hits and five runs. Sorce also walked five and struck out five.
Jonathan Arias and Fray Martinez pitched well out of the Sox pen. Arias endured his longest outing of the season, throwing four innings and allowing one earned run. Martinez struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
Serrano continued his hot hitting against the Volcanoes, going 2-4 with a run scored. Ryan Royster and Dwight Britton also had two hits apiece.
The AquaSox will play host to the Volcanoes for three games beginning Saturday night at 7:05. Left-hander Edlando Seco (1-0, 3.49 ERA) takes the hill against righty Taylor Rogers (3-2, 4.08 ERA).
The first 1,000 fans through the gates Saturday receive a free AquaSox fleece blanket, courtesy of Comcast. Fans can also take part in the inaugural AquaSox Grab Bag Fundraiser, benefiting the AquaSox Community Fund, where they can purchase mystery "grab bags" containing a baseball signed by either Minor League or Major League players from across the country.
