State College Spikes News Release
AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes produced 18 hits on Saturday night, but needed to withstand a big second inning by the Auburn Doubledays and rescue themselves from a deficit two times to win, 11-10, at Falcon Park.
Adalberto Santos's eighth-inning double brought State College (15-14) to a tie, with Chase Lyles's two-out base hit providing the Spikes' second lead of the game. Walker Gourley, who homered for the first time in a State College uniform in the fourth inning, then produced an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth, a run that provided the final margin of victory.
After going down, 1-0, in the first inning, the Spikes put together five runs in the second inning, with wall-ball doubles by Cole White and Gift Ngoepe provided most of the damage. However, the Doubledays (11-18) responded with seven runs of their own, capped by a two-run Lance Durham single. All seven runs came off of State College starter Kevin Decker, who brought a string of 13 1/3 scoreless innings into the game, and left without recording an out in the frame.
The Spikes were able to start their second comeback with Gourley's solo shot in the fourth. Matt Curry's RBI single in the sixth then scored another run to set the stage for the eighth-inning heroics by Santos and Lyles.
Gourley, Santos and Curry all had three hits for the Spikes, with Santos providing a total of three runs batted in.
Casey Sadler (2-0) earned the victory for the Spikes with two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out one. Justin Ennis (1) picked up the save in his first save opportunity of the year, allowing a run on two hits and striking out the final batter of the game in the ninth. Jhonathan Ramos also served a crucial role for State College, pitching four scoreless innings from the second to the fifth to keep the Spikes within striking distance.
Auburn reliever Travis Garrett (1-3) took the loss after allowing the Spikes' three eighth-inning runs, although only one was earned. Garrett also yielded five hits while striking out two over five innings.
Marcus Knecht went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for the Doubledays, while Jonathan Jones broke out of a 1-for-13 slump to go 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, plus 2 RBI. The seven Auburn runs in the second were the most in a single inning by any Spikes opponent in 2010.
Sunday, the Spikes and Doubledays meet again at 6:05 p.m. at Falcon Park for the second game of their three-game set. State College will send left-hander Zac Fuesser (0-0) to the mound for his second start of the season. Fuesser allowed one run on four hits over four innings in his last outing against Vermont on Tuesday. Auburn will go with right-hander Casey Lawrence (3-0), whose 0.61 ERA is tops in the New York-Penn League. However, the Spikes have scored 12 runs on 17 hits over 4 1/3 innings against the last two starters they have faced with sub-1.00 ERA's coming into the game.
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 5:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Falcon Park.
