Strong Pitching Leads Drive Past Sand Gnats, 4-2
July 17, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Savannah, GA - A night after their pitching staff was knocked around for nine runs, the duo of Kendal Volz and Jeremiah Bayer exacted some revenge for the Drive (51-42, 15-8) against the Sand Gnats (52-41, 10-13).
The pair of right-handers surrendered just two runs, while scattering eight hits, walking none, and striking out six as Greenville defeated Savannah 4-2 at Historic Grayson Stadium.
The Drive offense, meanwhile, struck first with a pair of runs to start the game.
Following a one-out single by Zach Gentile, Ronald Bermudez roped a double down the leftfield line for the first run.
A throwing error by Savannah shortstop Wilfredo Tovar on the play allowed Bermudez to come around and score.
An RBI-single by Jefry Marte in the bottom of the first cut the Sand Gnats deficit in half, but it would be the only run that Volz would allow (6-3).
The former Baylor Bear retired the next 15 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Alonzo Harris in the bottom of the sixth.
With two more runs in the top of the third, the Drive closed out their scoring which was enough to eventually hang on for the victory.
Only tallying one hit in the inning, a single by Derrik Gibson, Greenville was able to manufacture both runs.
After a sacrifice bunt by Zach Gentile moved runners to second and third, Bermudez lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Gibson then scored on a wild pitch.
Bayer tossed the final three innings out of the Greenville bullpen, picking up his fifth save of the season.
A one-out groundout by Dock Doyle in the bottom of the seventh accounted for the Sand Gnats final run, which was aided earlier in the inning by a balk by Bayer.
With the series knotted at two games apiece, the Drive and Sand Gnats will meet in the rubber match on Sunday with first pitch set for 6:05 PM.
Following the series in Savannah, the Drive return home on Tuesday, July 20th for a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators.
Not only is the first game of the series a BI-LO Tasty Tuesday where kids 12 and under eat free, but it's also "Silly Bandz Night." For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
