BURLINGTON, VT --- Renzo Telllo hit a three-run homer and former University of Vermont pitcher Chris Blazek picked up the victory in relief as the Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 5-2 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Bruno Stadium.

Blazek (1-0) was drafted by the Houston Astros back in 2005 and has pitched as high as Double-A, but is back with Tri-City after missing the entire 2009 season due to injury. The left-hander came on in relief in the fifth inning and struckout the side, then had two more strikeouts in the sixth inning as he retired all six batters he faced for the victory.

Vermont had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out Jack Walker infield single and Wilfri Pena RBI double, but the ValleyCats responded with four runs off Lake Monster starter Chad Jenkins in the bottom of the inning.

Ben Heath got the rally started with a one-out single and Daniel Adamson followed with a walk before Tello launched a 1-1 pitch from Jenkins over the leftfield fence for a 3-1 ValleyCat lead. Tri-City added another run in the inning as Frank Almonte doubled and scored on a Oscar Figueroa RBI single.

The Lake Monsters got a run back in the fourth as Justin Miller doubled with two outs and scored on a Pena RBI single. Tri-City got an unearned run on the bottom of the fourth as Jenkins (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings for the loss. Vermont starters had entered the game allowing just three earned runs over 28 2/3 innings in the team's first six games.

Tello was 2-for-4 with the three-run homer, his first of the season, while Figueroa was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Starter Bobby Doran allowed two runs on five hits over four innings, while Michael Hess came on with the tying-run at the plate in the ninth inning to strikeout Stephen King to end the game.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lake Monsters, but Vermont (5-2) still leads the Stedler Division by two games over Connecticut, Tri-City and Lowell (all at 3-4).

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats wrap up their three-game series at Tri-City on Friday night with Matt Swynenberg scheduled to start for Vermont, which then heads to Connecticut for games Saturday and Sunday. The Lake Monsters return home for a three-game series with Lowell starting Monday.
