Barnes' Cycle Lifts Lancaster Past Visalia

June 10, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

For the second straight night, a JetHawks outfielder hit for the cycle. Brandon Barnes accomplished the rare feat on Wednesday to help the JetHawks earn a 7-4 victory over Visalia at Clear Channel Stadium. Barnes' cycle came one night after Lancaster's Freddy Parejo hit for the cycle. Barnes, who finished 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored, became the fifth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.

The JetHawks grabbed the early lead with a pair of runs in the first off Rawhide starter Brett Moorhouse. Albert Cartwright socked a solo home run and Barnes followed with a solo blast of his own, which gave Lancaster a 2-0 edge.

After Visalia scored twice in the top of the fifth to even the score at 2-2, the JetHawks pushed three runs across in the bottom of the frame. Barnes contributed a two-run triple in the frame and Lee Cruz hit an RBI double to put Lancaster in front 5-2.

With the JetHawks leading 5-4 in the seventh, Barnes laced a double to center field, which left him a single short of the cycle.

Cartwright's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth gave Lancaster a pair of insurance runs and provided Barnes the chance for one more at-bat. Barnes hit a slow roller to shortstop and hustled down the line to beat out Brent Greer's throw for an infield single, which completed the cycle.

Mike Modica set down the Rawhide in order in the top of the ninth to seal Lancaster's 7-4 win and earn his first save of the season. Shane Wolf (4-4) turned in a quality start for Lancaster, allowing eight hits, four runs, three of which were earned, with a walk and five strikeouts, in six innings of work. Moorhouse (1-1) took the loss for Visalia With the win, Lancaster snapped its three-game losing streak and improved to 18-41. Visalia fell to 29-31.

The JetHawks will seek a series split when the two team square off in the finale of the four-game set on Thursday. Visalia is expected to start lefty Daniel Taylor (0-3, 9.68 ERA). Lancaster will counter with right-hander Kyle Greenwalt (1-4, 4.53 ERA).
