Winston Dashes Past Salem, 3-2

May 25, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 25, 2010)- Terry Doyle pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run on three hits, as the Winston-Salem Dash defeated the Salem Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Salem had the tying run at third base with two outs in the ninth, but Dash closer Gregory Infante struck out Oscar Tejeda to allow Winston-Salem to sneak away with a series opening victory.

Despite coming into the game as two of the best offensive teams in the Carolina League, pitching ruled the night as Doyle and Salem starter Caleb Clay dueled for six innings. Doyle (1-1) earned his first Carolina league win in only his second start after being promoted from low-A Kannapolis.

Clay (2-2) was fantastic for Salem, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one. But the right-hander surrendered his lone run after Jason Bour tripled to lead off the fifth inning, and was brought home on an RBI single by Kyle Shelton.

The Dash doubled their lead in the seventh off reliever Will Latimer. Luis Sierra, who reached base on a bunt single to lead off the inning, was driven in by a Brandon Short two-out double down the left field line.

The Sox responded in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a leadoff double by Alex Hassan. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Dent, Hassan scored on a single by Peter Hissey to reduce the Winston-Salem lead to one.

Winston-Salem regained its two-run edge courtesy of four consecutive walks by Salem reliever Zach Hammes in the ninth inning. Shelton scored on the fourth free pass to increase the Dash lead to 3-1. Blake Maxwell entered with one out and the bases loaded and induced a double play ball from Jon Gilmore to end the threat and give Salem a chance in their final at bat.

Salem countered with a rally of its own in the last half of the ninth off Winston-Salem closer Infante. Mitch Dening led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Dent. After a wild pitch by Infante moved the runners to second and third, Hissey grounded out to drive in Dening. With two outs and a runner on third, Tejeda struck out swinging to end the ballgame.

Infante picked up his league-leading eighth save of the year, as the Dash improved to a Minor League-best 32-13 on the season, a full six games ahead of the Sox.

Hissey picked up one of Salem's five hits on the night and drove in both of the Sox' runs in his four plate appearances. Hassan's seventh inning double was the lone extra base hit Salem mustered in the contest.

The two squads meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 at Lewis-Gale Field. Alex Wilson will get the call for Salem, while Nevin Griffith will start for the Dash.
