Moncton, NB - David Savard of the Moncton Wildcats was named the CHL's defenceman of year Saturday afternoon at the annual awards ceremony during the MasterCard Memorial Cup in Brandon, Manitoba. A native of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, he beat out Tyson Barrie of the Kelowna Rockets and Jacob Muzzin of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to capture the national award.
Savard came to the Moncton Wildcats in a trade with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in 2007. This season he lead all defencemen in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 77 points scoring 13 goals and 64 assists. He finished the regular season with a plus 32 rating. In 21 playoff games leading to the Wildcats capturing their second President Cup in five years, Savard had one goal and 14 assists.
He was selected in the fourth round of last year's NHL entry draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Savard was one of the key members of the Wildcats blue line corps, helping win the Robert Label Trophy as the best defensive team in the Q for the past two seasons. He was the winner of the Emile Bouchard Trophy as the best defenceman in the League and was named to the first all star team.
Savard will join the Wildcats teammates and their fans on Monday to celebrate their second President Cup championship in five years, at the Coliseum beginning at 6pm.
