Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Drive (21-20) made a strong case for a run at first place Thursday night at Fluor Field. Pounding out 15 hits, led by Reymond Fuentes and Dan Butler's three apiece, Greenville made short work of the Southern Division-leading Augusta GreenJackets (25-16), 11-4.
Following a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Drive exploded for all of their runs over a two inning span. Michael Almanzar began the six-run barrage in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run. After an RBI-double by Butler and a run-scoring single by Vladimir Frias, Fuentes capped the inning with a three-run homer to right-centerfield.
After sending 10 batters to the plate in the second, Greenville sent all batted around again an inning later for five more runs. Although the leadoff batter was retired, the next five batters all reached base including a two-run double by Frias and a two-run triple off the bat of Fuentes.
Those hits brought an early end to Augusta's Chris Heston (2-4) outing, after just 2.1 innings. The right-hander was charged with his eleventh run when Gibson singled off Brian Irving to plate Fuentes.
Although they scored four runs, the GreenJackets didn't show much life in the series opener. Yeiper Castillo (2-3) allowed all of Augusta's runs - three earned - on five hits and two walks while fanning four in 5.2 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Cesar Cabral continued his solid 2010 campaign, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings en route to his fourth save in as many opportunities. The big southpaw allowed just two hits and struckout three, while extending his scoreless inning streak to 16.0 innings, a span of eight appearances.
The Drive and GreenJackets will continue their series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Kendal Volz (3-2, 3.22 ERA) will look to extend Greenville's win streak to three games, while Augusta counters with right-hander Jorge Bucardo (2-2, 2.08 ERA).
Following Friday's game, fans will be treated to a spectacular fireworks show, set to a disco mania musical theme. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
