Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Moncton Wildcats are out and the Brandon Wheat Kings have gained a berth into Friday's Semi-Finals at the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The Wildcats dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime decision to the defending champion Windsor Spitfires Tuesday night, leaving them winless in three round robin games and a quick exit from the National Championship.
While Windsor has already clinched a berth into Sunday's Championship Final, both Calgary and Brandon - Wednesday's opponents in the sixth and final round robin game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup - will face off against one another on Friday for the right to meet the Spitfires.
In Tuesday's game, Eric Wellwood buried a rebound from the slot at 12:22 of the first overtime for the game-winner, which spoiled a brilliant performance from Wildcats back-up goalie Shane Owen, who made 48 saves in defeat.
The defeat was even harder to swallow after Wildcats forward Daniel Pettersson clanged a shot off the crossbar with 24.3 seconds left in regulation time.
There was plenty of talk before the game about the possibility of Wildcats' sniper Nicolas Deschamps returning to the lineup, but a high ankle sprain kept him on the sidelines.
Deschamps, who tied for the QMJHL scoring lead with 96 points in 64 games, suffered the injury April 23, and while he tried to give it a go during the morning skate, his mobility was limited, and he was ruled out of the contest prior to the pre-game warm-up.
Wednesday's game will be another sell out at Westman Place and will feature a rematch of this year's WHL Eastern Conference Final that saw the Hitmen win the best of seven series in five games.
Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
