Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich. - Didi Gregorius made a diving catch of a foul pop with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Dayton Dragons held on to defeat the Great Lakes Loons 5-4 on Thursday night. The win was the Dragons fourth straight and improved their record to 17-17. The victory snapped the Dragons nine-game road losing streak.
Dragons reliever Doug Salinas notched his second save as he came on to record the final out and strand three Loons base runners in the bottom of the ninth. Great Lakes scored one run in the inning.
Henry Rodriguez hit a home run and drove in two runs and Alex Oliveras added a solo homer to lift the Dragons to their first road victory since April 16.
The Dragons broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh inning. Mark Fleury led off the inning with a double to right-center field and went to third on Kevin Coddington's sacrifice. Frank Pfister followed with a double to center to drive in Fleury and make it 4-3. Two batters later, Pfister scored from third on Henry Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to give Dayton a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Andrew Means made a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Angelo Songco to start the inning. Bryant Hernandez doubled to left to bring the tying run to the plate. Gregorius made a diving play to his left on a ground ball off the bat of Gorman Erickson and threw Erickson out at first for the second out. Lenell McGee was hit by a pitch. Salinas replaced Ezequiel Infante and allowed a single to Rafael Ynoa to bring in Hernandez and make it 5-4. Salinas walked Christian Lara to load the bases, moving the tying run to third and the winning run to second with two outs. Brian Ruggiano lifted a high, hooking fly ball down the left field line. With the outfield shading to the right, only Gregorius had a chance to make the play, and he turned in the third great defensive play of the inning to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin (2-2) earned the win. He worked the first six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Dragons play at Great Lakes Friday at 7:05 p.m. The next home game is Tuesday, May 18 against the Lansing Lugnuts.
