DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (6-10) dug themselves a big early hole against the Tampa Yankees (9-7) and could not find a way out as they dropped the final game of the series, 11-3. Cubs starter Brooks Raley came into Friday night's game without allowing a run. He left Friday's contest after just two and two-thirds innings pitched and eleven runs were on the scoreboard for the Yankees.

Raley gave up six runs in the first inning as the Yankees sent ten batters to the plate. After a leadoff walk by Abraham Almonte and a single from Walter Ibarra, second baseman Jose Pirela brought them both home with a double off the center field wall. Melky Mesa drove a one-out single to center field to plate Pirela. The bottom two in the order then came through for the Yankees as left fielder Jack Rye and designated hitter Addison Maruszak picked up RBI-singles to complete the six run inning.

Three more came across for Tampa in the second inning to extend the Yankees lead to nine runs. They made it an eleven run advantage before Raley was taken out of the game in the third.

Daytona got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning off Yankees starter Dan Kapala. The big righty was wild all night as he issued four walks through just 2.1 innings pitched. DJ LeMahieu got the rally started with an infield single. Kyler Burke followed with a walk before Josh Vitters was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Designated hitter Matthew Spencer drove in the first run for Daytona with a single to center. David Macias kept the rally going with an RBI-single of his own and the final run of the frame came home on a bases-loaded walk to Michael Brenly.

The game did pick up the pace, as both teams were held scoreless from the fourth inning on. The Cubs bullpen was one positive to take out of the contest. Luke Sommer was impressive with four and a third innings of scoreless baseball.

The Daytona Cubs look to rebound as they head to Brevard County to take on the Manatees for a quick two-game series starting Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. You can hear all the action on AM1340 WROD.
