Jupiter Falls 5-4 To Mets, Splits Series

Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
In his first two starts, Jupiter's Graham Johnson issued only four walks, going a long way towards allowing only three earned runs in those games. His five walks in tonight's start, however, were equally powerful drivers of a 5-4 loss to the Mets.
Johnson (0-2) issued two walks in the 3rd inning, but the damage was erased on a double play. In the 5th, he wouldn't be so lucky, as his two walks were followed by hit batsman, loading the bases. Johnson exited for reliever Andy Loomis, off whom Florida State League hitters have only been 2-for-24 (.083) all season. But Mets first baseman Stefan Welch laced a single through the left side, driving home two of Johnson's bequeathed runners. Loomis almost got out of the inning without letting the final of Johnson's runners score, but when Welch was picked off, he managed to extend the game of pickle long enough for another run to cross the plate. What had been a close 2-1 deficit turned into a 5-1 hole from which the Hammerheads (7-7) couldn't quite climb out of.
That's not to say they didn't try. In the bottom of that fateful 5th, Jupiter took two quick outs, but then loaded the bases. A wild pitch by Mets starter Kyle Allen (1-0) allowed shortstop Chris Wade to slide home, but Allen would bounce back with a strikeout to end the inning.
It was a pattern the Hammerheads followed in each of the next two innings, managing a two-out run, but nothing more. In the end, especially with the Mets (6-8) bringing in Emary Frederick from Double-A Binghamton and closer Manuel Alvarez, there just wasn't enough time to come back only one run at a time.
